Amstrad CPC international font

You might have seen many Amstrad CPC fonts online. The one that seems to outlive the others is called “Amstrad CPC Correct“, uploaded by Damien Guard 10 years ago.

Now, I’ve edited it using BitFontMaker2 to create an international version of it! The tool was nice to use, but I think I already regret not using FontStruct, which would make it easier to add even more international glyphs; however, I cannot seem to import the font there.

Both in proportional and monospace variants.

Part of the character set

I do admit that I have cheated a little – some of the characters don’t really fit into an 8×8 pixel square anymore. On the other hand, in some, I really enjoyed making at least small sacrifices that bring back memories of trying to fit Polish diacritics into the matrix back in the days. The letter “Ć” here is still 8×9, but yuu might notice I turned some pixels off to make the acute accent “cut into” the letter a bit, so it’s more visible. Looking at the glyphs today, I have no idea how 12-year-old me managed to squeze the acute accent into the “Ó” and make it look good. If you want, feel free to suggest edits or update the font and send the updated version.

Bonus: Amstrad CPC mode 2 font!

Mode 2 variant is downloadable below. I wasn’t able to upload it to any of the aforementioned websites, but I can host it myself, why not:

In this file, you’re getting a font that looks like this:

The characters are twice narrower, no longer a square. This is the font you got when working in the 80 columns mode.

I do have an idea that the code samples here should be in either Mode 2 font, or a 9-pin dot matrix printer font, while the blog could use the typography of the beautiful Amstrad manual. What do you think?
